Choice.
What an incredibly powerful word.
It means the right or ability to make, or the possibility from one or more selections. It is not only about
the power to act: to choose, but about the selection from which one CAN choose.
Unfortunately, this word now seems to have lost its power. Instead, it has become trite. The word
”trite",” by the way, comes from the Latin word “terere” which means “to wear down.” So appropriate,
don’t you think? For both the descriptor of AND the word whose power and meaning has been greatly
diminished from overuse.
The ability to choose is the greatest power we, as humans, possess. And most of us don’t even know we have it. We can literally create our own world, our own identity, by how we feel
and what we think. By the habits we create. By what we choose to do and when. By how we respond
to a thousand different scenarios we experience daily, by the thousands of choices we make daily.
Instead, we go about our lives on autopilot, oblivious to the power we possess to change and
literally create our lives. Or worse, by deliberately choosing to ignore it.
It reminded me of a conversation I had with a psychic when I was in my 20’s and interviewing him for a
feature story in my college newspaper. I was both skeptical and fascinated by his supposed “gifts,” so I
asked him for an example of his interaction with folks on other planes of existence he claimed to have.
I’ll never forget the story he told me. It left a lasting impression on me whether it was “true” or not.
He shared that he had experienced being with people who had died but were stuck on this plane of
existence instead of moving on. When I asked what he meant by that, he said: “Imagine a person who
has died, sitting in a chair in a room with his eyes closed. He is surrounded by his spirit guides, waiting
to take him to the next plane of his existence. Only one thing stands in his way. He will not open his
eyes and see what is before him.”
What is it that WE do not see that is right in front of us? Because we are too busy? Too self-
absorbed? Or because we simply choose NOT to?
What COULD we choose to create? Or change? If we would only open our eyes to see the power we
already possess and use it?
